What is a fic fest? How does it work?

A fic fest is a fandom, usually ship-centric event that connects prompters with fic writers. The event goes as follows: first, the prompters submit their fanfiction prompts. These prompts are then curated into a table that the fic writers can choose them from. The fic writers claim a prompt of their liking and start working on writing a fic based on that prompt. The event concludes with everyone posting their fics on Reveal Day!

Who can participate?

Anyone - you don’t have to be active in the fandom or have any experience as a writer to participate. In addition, if you are submitting a prompt, you can do so anonymously!

What is the timeline for the fic fest?

Prompting period: 8 July - 22 July (2 weeks)Claiming period: 22 July - 5 August (2 weeks,) or until all prompts have been claimedWriting period: 5 August - 23 September (7 weeks)Reveal day: 23rd September

This is an informal event, so we aren’t going to conduct check-ins, and you don’t have to ask us for extensions if you can’t make the reveal day deadline. Our role as organizers will be limited to curating various forms and sheets, posting deadline reminders, and boosting your works on Reveal Day and beyond from our Twitter account.

What does a prompter do?

A prompter submits a prompt (or several) through a Prompting Form. You will have a chance to summarize your fanfiction idea, as well as specify what you’d like and wouldn’t like to see in the fic. Please note, however, that even if your prompt is claimed by a writer, there is no guarantee that they will be able to adhere to your every preference, although we do encourage them to do so!

What does a writer do?

A writer first picks up to 3 prompts of their liking from a mod-curated Prompt Sheet that will become available after the prompting period is over. They then fill a Claiming Form (will be linked soon), where they rank up to 3 prompts that they would like to claim in order of preference. The claiming will happen on a first-come-first-serve basis, i.e. whoever fills the Claiming Form the earliest will get to claim the prompt of their liking. You’ll be able to see what prompt you ended up getting on the Prompt Sheet!

Please note that according to the interest check we conducted, the minimum word count for writers is 2,000 words. However, writers shouldn't feel pressured to strictly adhere to the minimum word count and may still participate even if their word count is lower.

Can I claim and write for several prompts?

You can do so if you finish working on your first fic ahead of time. To explain further, if you have completed your fic based on your claimed prompt before the reveal day and you would like to claim another prompt and write some more, then please check the Prompt Sheet for the unclaimed prompts and fill out the Claiming Form once again!

I really liked a particular prompt, but it’s already been claimed. Can several writers write for one prompt if they like it a lot?

We will limit one prompt to one writer in order to ensure that (1) as many prompts as possible are claimed and (2) there will be no grievances between the writers. If you feel particularly passionate about a prompt that has already been claimed, please feel free to reach out to the claimant to see if they’d be okay with you writing a fic based on the same prompt!

What should the writers do on Reveal Day?

On Reveal Day, please post your work on AO3 or another platform of your liking. If you are posting on AO3, please post your work to our AO3 collection (the link will be provided closer to Reveal Day.) If your prompter is not anonymous, feel free to DM them or tag their social media account to show them that their prompt has been fulfilled! If you would like to promote your work, feel free to post it on Twitter with a hashtag #chiscaraficfest, and we will RT your work from the event account. You can post regardless of your time zone, as long as it’s Reveal Day for you!
